I pedaled farther than usual. Once I’d cleared the busy highway and all the traffic lights, I felt a little proud of myself. On the way back, I made a detour to an empty parking lot. I took my feet off the pedals and planted both feet on the ground. I smoothed out the hem of my skirt and took a deep breath. Since I was there, I struck a little pose in front of my bike. It wasn’t like I was showing off to anyone, but this is who I am right now. Being “me”—not “me” as a guy—feels this free. The fatigue and tension from the long ride seem to melt away. The shadow cast on the parking lot asphalt looks much more upright than my usual self. Today, too, I managed to be myself.
